Summary

The light-hearted isekai tale about a fantasy pharmacist that inspired the anime! (And don't miss the original light novels, also from Seven Seas!)

When corporate drone Reiji wakes up in another world, he comes face-to-face with a fatally wounded werewolf。 Thankfully, Reiji's new Medicine Maker skill enables him to brew uniquely effective potions。 Alongside his new wolf-girl friend, Reiji and his amazing cures are ready to revolutionize this fantasy world。 Be they an old man seeking the secret of youth or an elven archer with blurry vision, all comers are welcome to his countryside pharmacy。

Life for Reiji, Noella, and Mina continues to move forward, slice by slice。 They aren’t exactly loafing around, but nothing of importance happens and what does happen, well, some of it probably shouldn’t have。Sigh。 You’re being warned。 This is a ‘cranky old man misses the point’ review, but one thing I have learned is that your life and your views inform the way you see things (duh) and there’s way too much problematic stuff in this volume for yours truly。Ironically that means the ridiculous fem Life for Reiji, Noella, and Mina continues to move forward, slice by slice。 They aren’t exactly loafing around, but nothing of importance happens and what does happen, well, some of it probably shouldn’t have。Sigh。 You’re being warned。 This is a ‘cranky old man misses the point’ review, but one thing I have learned is that your life and your views inform the way you see things (duh) and there’s way too much problematic stuff in this volume for yours truly。Ironically that means the ridiculous female armor designs on the tsundere mercenary captain don’t even break the top five of things that beggar belief in this one。 That whole section is actually ‘harem anime’ fun, as we see Reiji dealing with potion addiction and trying to peddle a new washing liquid。Unsurprisingly, Noella’s adorable behaviour steals most of the volume - after Reiji callously forgets her and uses her as an emotional support animal, her expressions here are wonderful, she gets a terribly cute revenge in a section based around a deodorizer。Where this book loses me utterly starts with its first chapter, which involves a ‘women be crazy’ throughline that is incredibly annoying and while I don’t begrudge the solution, an underlying problem is an underlying problem, there’s some serious issues here that should probably be worked through。Then there’s the last part of this book and we bring back the gay elf who has the hots for Reiji and if that was a bad idea the first go, well, it doesn’t get any better here with his second appearance。The elf’s sister, who (of course) has a brother complex, shows up and complains about how gay her brother is and, god my teeth are gritting as I even type this, she and Reiji devise a potion to chemically arrest his sex drive。Look, I get it, he’s a pest, this is a comedy book with no deeper meaning。 You probably won’t even care。 But you don’t get to chemically castrate somebody and not have my eyebrows go through the roof。 It doesn’t help that, as a pharmacist, I can’t just set aside the number of ethics violations here (professional hazard)。Naturally it all goes wrong when the sister dumps the whole potion into his food at once, unbeknownst to him naturally, as she’s trying to ‘cure’ him of his gayness。 So we get conversion therapy mixed into all this, thanks manga, I really needed to think about that being brought down just because a pushy guy has a crush。I don’t think that’s the intention, but the cringe gay humour feels like it’s out of Three’s Company (kids, ask your parents, or don’t) and the implications of all this are so horrific that I could not shake them no matter how much I tried。 It just sours the entire experience and it is what it is and it reads how I read it。2 stars and this book’s lucky I’m not giving it less。 No matter how harmless the surrounding stuff is, what I’m carrying forward from this one is all the stuff that left a super bad taste in my mouth。 It really dampened my enthusiasm after a really fun first volume。 Yuck。 。。。more
